After installing WordPress, it's essential to adjust some basic settings to ensure security, performance, and usability. These steps help avoid future problems and prepare the site for growth.
General settings
- Site title and tagline: go to Settings → General and set the site name and short description.
- Timezone and language: choose the correct timezone and language (e.g., Portuguese – Brazil).
- Site address: make sure the
https://
field is active to use SSL.
Reading and homepage
- In Settings → Reading, define whether the homepage will be a blog or a static page.
- Choose how many posts to display per page and whether to show the full content or just a summary.
Permalinks (URLs)
- In Settings → Permalinks, select the Post name option.
- This makes URLs more user-friendly and SEO-optimized.
Discussion and comments
- In Settings → Discussion, choose whether to allow comments on posts. We recommend disabling everything in this section.
- If you still want to allow comments, enable moderation to prevent spam.
Users and permissions
- In Users → Add New, create separate logins for collaborators.
- Assign roles (Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber) to control access levels.
Important integrations
- Enable SSL (https://) for security.
- Set up a caching plugin to improve speed.
- Add an SEO plugin to optimize the site.
Extra tip
After configuring your site, test everything as a visitor: browse, comment, register, and fill out forms. This helps fix issues before launch.
